product review: Vega all-in-one nutritional shake

I have heard so many great things about this company and their protein shakes (check them out here)that I had to try it out myself.

pea protein smoothie

This protein is a plant based protein so it is made with a protein blend that consists of pea protein, hemp seed protein, and sprouted whole grain brown rice protein and is sweetened with stevia. It also contains an omega 3 flax and chia seed blend (which translates to the equivalent of 2.3 servings of salmon), a green blend (which translates to the equivalent of 3 servings of greens), an antioxidant blend (which translates to the equivalent of 2.7 cups of blueberries), probiotic blend (which translates to the equivalent of 1 serving of yogurt), and digestive enzyme blend. Nutritionally, one serving offers 135 cal, 3g total fat, 15g protein, 2g sugar, and 6g fiber. It’s not incredibly high in protein but it’s decent. pea protein smoothie2

I only received the french vanilla flavor to try so I can only comment on that flavor. Admittedly, when I first smelled the protein, I was a little hesitant. It had the usual smell associated with plant based proteins. I have tried quite a few now and I have never really liked the vanilla flavors because the flavor of the pea protein always comes through. This one wasn’t half bad, though. the vanilla flavor did help disguise the flavor which was nice.

I mostly used this protein powder in my post workout protein smoothies (as pictured throughout the post) but I also did some baking with it and it worked great! I don’t want to give it away right now but I will make a separate post with that creation in the very near future 🙂

I also noticed, since this was an all in one nutritional shake, it was incredibly filling. After having a serving, I would be pretty full for quite awhile after. These shakes are very nutrient dense so they not only make a great option post workout but also as a meal replacement given the nice array of nutrients. It is important to note, however, that because this is an all-in-one shake, it is very nutrient dense as you can see above and also offers 50% RDI vitamins and minerals. Having said that, beware of any extra supplements you take if you choose to add a shake like this to your daily regimen. Many supplemental vitamins offer high amounts of nutrients, as well, and in this case, too much of a good thing is, well, not always a good thing. Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are stored in the body and, over time, can accumulate and lead to toxic levels in the body. And although it was previously thought that water soluble vitamins (b vitamins and vitamin C were just excreted in the urine if taken in excess but research is finding that if a person fasts, that’s not always the case. So just be mindful of how many supplements you are taking and be aware of the upper limits of nutrients so you aren’t taking more than you should.

And speaking of taking more than you should of something, also be mindful of stevia. My biggest complaint about these shakes is that they contain stevia. Only because stevia seems to be making an appearance in EVERYTHING. Both sugar and sweeteners are fine, in moderation, but it’s when they are added to everything that it can become a problem. So just make sure you are mindful of how many other products you are consuming that contain stevia and other sweeteners like it. like sugar, it is recommended that you keep your sweetener intake to a minimum.

Overall, I really enjoyed trying this brand of protein and would recommend it to those looking for a plant based protein.
