Today is national nut day so I encourage everyone to go nuts for nuts – not just today but on a weekly basis. Nuts are great sources of vitamin e, unsaturated fats, and protein. While they are a great snack choice, the dietitian in me must remind you to keep your snacking to only a handful. While nuts are a great healthy snack, they are still high in fat and calories. Even though they are composed of healthier fats, that doesn’t mean you can go crazy with them. To keep them a apart of a healthy diet, eat only a handful of nuts or a few teaspoons of a nut butter.
Instead of buying nut butters, I also encourage you to buy your own nuts and make your own nut butters. This allows you to use any variety of nuts you want and also control the ingredients. In fact, I made my own homemade peanut butter as well as peanut + almond butter with baking cocoa and some peppermint extract for a chocolate mint peanut/almond butter. Pure heaven!
Below, I’ve include a nice info graphic of various nuts and the health benefits they offer
So be sure to go nuts for nuts 😉
