How to raise a healthy eater: Part 4

One concern with feeding children (not just healthy food but food in general) is the risk of choking. This post is going to discuss ways to keep your child safe.

Making mealtime safer:

– have children serve themselves small amounts at a time

– stay with children while they are eating and watch them closely

– ask your kids to:

sit up. Never allow a child to eat while lying down, walking, or running

stay calm. encourage children to keep calm – no yelling or horseplay while eating

eat slowly. encourage children to eat one bite at a time

– prepare foods in a way that is safe for your child – this will be explained further below

Avoiding Choking Risks

Shape

Marble-sized or round foods can get stuck in a child’s throat.

Examples: hot dogs, hard candy, dried fruit

Solution: Cut into short strips rather than round pieces

Smooth and Slippery

Smooth foods can slip down a child’s throat before they have a chance to chew

Examples: Cherry tomatoes, cooked pasta

Solution: Quarter the food or chop into small pieces

Sticky

Sticky foods can “ball up” in the airway and get stuck

Examples: Peanut butter, fruit roll-ups, marshmallows

Solution: spread thinly on crackers or bread, or cut into small pieces

Hard to Chew

Foods that take a long time to chew or are hard to bread down can get stuck

Examples: Bagels, beef jerky, large pieces of meat

Solution: cut into small pieces

Hard and Crisp

Food that break into chunks may slip into the throat before they are chewed

Examples: Pretzels, chips, raw carrots, other raw vegetables

Solution: cook until soft enough to pierce with a fork, or break into small pieces
