Product Review: Atkins Endulge Chocolate Coconut Bar

My fiance brought home these bars a few days ago. And I don’t mean he brought home a couple. He brought home BOXES of these bars. We have at least 10 boxes of these (7 of them are coconut and the others are chocolate chip). Even thought I’ve been trying to eat more “natural” lately, these bars intrigued me. First of all, I love chocolate. And second of all, I love coconut. And when they are combined, I am in heaven. So right off the bat I had to try one of these bars.

Taste wise, the coconut chocolate bars are delish. They remind me a lot of a mounds bar.

The ingredients aren’t the most “natural” so if you’re looking for something more natural, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for a great tasting treat with 9 grams of fiber (yes, 9 grams of fiber in one little bar) then this is the bar for you. The downsides to these bars, well, first off the coconut ones contain 10 g of saturated fat. Now natural coconut has been shown to be beneficial when consumed. Over 50% of its saturated fat consists of lauric acid which has been shown to be antiviral, antibacterial, and extremely beneficial in fighting off infection. However, when coconut is tampered with (meaning processed or turned into hydrogenated coconut oil), it is altered in a way that removes the lauric acid and instead of having health benefits, it now clogs arteries and decreases heart health. So most likely, consuming coconut in the form that is used in these bars is not going to be very beneficial. But I don’t know for sure. All the ingredients list says is “coconut” but I don’t know what that means. I don’t know if they did something to the coconut before adding it to the bars or if it is in a more natural form. So my point after all that, is not to look at these bars as necessarily being considered healthy bars. To me, they are more of a bar you would eat in place of dessert.

Another downside is that these bars are super tiny (at least the coconut ones are). They are only 1.4 oz (about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide). For me, they are actually a pretty good size but I was very surprised when I opened the box and saw how tiny they were. But still, 9 grams of fiber in that tiny little bar!

One great thing about these bars is that they contain sugar alcohols so they are bars even diabetics can enjoy. Sugar alcohols are basically a sugar alternative. Many times when you see a product claiming to be “sugar-free”, it’s because it contains sugar alcohols instead. The type of sugar that is usually used in products is called sucrose (known as table sugar). Sugar alcohols include erythritol, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol or xylitol and they are derived from sugars typically found in fruits.Their chemical makeup varies slightly from actual sucrose. The idea behind sugar alcohols, or the reason they are used, is because they are lower in calories from regular sugar. Sugar alcohols tend to have 1.5 to 3 calories per gram whereas table sugar typically has 4 calories per gram. The other reason they are used is because they are absorbed by the body differently from regular sugar. The body does not absorb them very quickly which means the sugar alcohols can pass through the body with minimal effect to blood sugar levels (a good thing for those with diabetes). Little insulin is needed to absorb these alcohols. When you eat a food with table sugar, the body digests it more quickly and must use insulin right away to introduce the sugar into the cells. This results in blood sugar spikes. Once your cells use up the sugar, your blood sugar levels fall. The only downside to sugar alcohols is that they can cause laxative effects as well as cause gas and bloating due to the sugar alcohols not being completely absorbed. So if you eat too many sugar alcohols, you may be one unhappy camper.

All in all, I enjoy these bars. They taste amazing and you get 9 grams of fiber from one bar. Plus, you may get nutritional benefits from the coconut. I can’t say for sure but I just like to pretend that when I eat these bars I’m getting some benefit from the coconut. It makes me feel better lol

If you’re looking for a sweet snack to replace dessert, then this is a great option. It still offers some nutritional benefits while still tasting great.

    • you don’t like the way atkins products taste? these tasted really good. BUT, actually i do have an idea for my own version. you could basically use the 3 ingredient chocolate recipe i posted many posts. let it harden a bit, get some coconut filling, then top it off with another layer of the 3 ingredient chocolate. voila! your own coconut chocolate bar.

  1. or you could do the same thing with just chocolate chips and vanilla (which, for some people, may be easier to attain than agave and coconut oil). i used to make my own peanut butter cups this way. i would melt choco chips in the microwave along with vanilla. let it harden in the freezer a bit and then add peanut butter and top it off with another layer of hardened choco chips and vanilla.
